New Board Members and Committees

Last month we held our annual shareholder meeting during which we held elections and discussed how all residents can get involved in the building operations and/or community building. The new board members who will serve from May 09 - May 10 are:

Sam Bernstein
Andrew Merelis
John Stislow

In addition, there are two active committees: the Garden Committee and the Website Committee. I'm part of the Website Committee and it's been a great way to get to know the neighbors and become active in improving the building/strenthening community. I encourage others to get involved either in one of the committees we have or by suggesting another committee that might help improve our building. Building Antenna Gets HD DTV

After working on this problem for the past few months, it has been determined that our existing building antenna does receive both VHF and UHF signals. Therefore, it is HD and Digital TV capable. Right now we have two residents receiving over 45 over-the-air channels in full beautiful high-definition. Through the hands-on work of Andrew, the board President, and Tony, the Super, and Rolando and Nasario our Door Staff, we have saved the building most of the $1,400 it would have cost us to replace our existing early-1980's antenna. Special thanks to the residents in 6M and 1M who helped us do troubleshooting. If you are a resident who is having trouble getting the new HDTV stations via our antenna, please e-mail the board at board@616east18.com to request that we help you with your antenna connection.

Laundry Room Flies Exterminated (Yay!)

As many of you know, there were lots of flies in the laundry room near the window for the past couple of months. After trying countless failed techniques, Tony (our super) and the exterminator hatched a winning strategy... they realized that the flies were actually coming from the floor drain, not the window sill where we saw most of them. They have since exterminated and temporarily sealed the drain which completely solved the fly problem. Thank you Tony and Exterminator Guy!!

Tree Planted in Front of Building

For those of you wondering about the new tree next to our front entrance, here is some info: Our new Garden Committee has been actively planning a host of external building improvements. More information about those plans will be coming soon, but their first step was to acquire our new tree for free from a Brooklyn resident who needed to remove it from his brownstone's back yard. The tree had to be pruned severely to be removed from the yard through the brownstone, so we hope it survives the next winter in it's very pruned state. It is a weeping cherry that should bloom beautifully next spring. The garden committee is looking for additional free gardening resources so stay tuned for further improvements.
